The Nordh Pas de Calais or Pagus Atrebatensis made part of the Flanders. 

In 1180 he was given in dowry to Isabelle de Flandres and Hainaut at the time of her marriage with Philippe Auguste. 
He comes back to his sons Louis VIII to his death in 1590. Which inserts him to the royal domain in 1223. 
Saint Louis gives it in appendage to his/her/its brother puîné Robert Ier in 1237. 
Robert II gives up it in 1250 to his son posthumous Robert Ier. 
It comes back to Mahaut then to Othon IV, Count of Burgundy by his marriage with the girl of Mahault in 1285. 
The court of Equals recognizes to two resumptions, in 1309 and 1318, rights of Mahaut, nonsuiting to his nephew Robert III. 
It belongs to the Count of Beaumont the Roger, which Jeanne wife of are Worth that is not other that the sister of the king Philippe VI. In 1329 the king takes the Artois. 
By marriage, the North Pas de Calais passes successively then in house comtoise of Burgundy, in the one of Dampierre-Flanders, in the second house capétienne of Burgundy. 
To Charles' death the Daring in 1477, it is given to the Hasbourgs, with the Flanders. It is his girl's marriage with Maximilian of Autr. 
It is given up to Louis XI by the treaty of Arras in 1482. The treaty of Senlis, by Charles VIII, in 1493 give back it home of Autr, while continuing to be a matter for the crown of France.

To the treaty of Arched in 1529, France loses the suzerainty of it. It Belongs to the Habsbourgs of Spain then. It is conquered to Spaniards in 1640 after a seat. Spaniards had stuck up to doors: " When French will take Arras, mice will eat cats ". 

He/it returns definitely to France in 1659 by the treaty of the Pyrenees. Except Area and St-Omer that form " the retained " Artois with for St-Omer capital. Region reconquered in 1677 and united by the treaty of Nimègue of 1679. 

Louis XV gives the title of Artois Count, in 1757, to his/her/its Charles-Philippe grandson, future Charles Philippe. 

At the time of the last two world wars of 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945, the North Pas de Calais was the many seat fight.
